Yes, indeed it has been too long. Wonder what Paine would think given that the US has become the Empire seeking wars around the world: China, Ukraine, and now Israel/Palestine. I'm beginning to think we are in a period like that just before WW1.
Seems clear to me what Paine would think. It's late here as I type this, but I'll post a famous passage to his letter to Kitty Few that describes it. You'll also find strong indications in his 8 Letters to the Citizens of the United States, one of the last things he wrote before his death. Paine would be first discountenanced ... sorrowful ... then angry ... then take action - the same thing we should be and do.
Regarding WWI, yes there are similarities. I personally find even more similarities with the Weimar Republic must pre WWII. I call this our Weimar moment.
