As Jordan Peterson recently stated, the "UK" brand of "parliamentary democracy" is the best system of government out there. It avoids the tendency found in some republics for citizenry to commingle patriotic fervor with their elected leaders - a dangerous mix.

It may be that Jordan Peterson has some credibility and authority in clinical psychology, but his opinions on political theory are his own and carry no weight of themselves. He's no more a guru than Angelina Jolie or any other celebrity. In fact, I'd say his view on this particular topic is silly, even preposterous. History is replete with examples of monarchs -- republican or absolute -- whose enthusiastic citizens comingled patriotic ferver in the commission of every atrocity known to man. You'll pardon me if I chuckle ...

Please pardon me also, dear friend, for taking so long to respond. I think I may have been ill when you posted this.

Parliamentary systems are quick to bury democracy as they imply active opposition to government. Should opposition be intimidated, watered down or ignored the one party can and will become a vile dictatorship. They have no reason to resign, and with each passing year they can only screw tighter caps on any possibility of opposition arising. Canada is the perfect example with their Trudeau government. Their opposition is all but nonexistent and dear Justin continues to descend deeper and deeper into a shameless dictator. His handling of truckers protests against crippling Covid restrictions were an epic show of a clamp down worthy of a Russian Autocrat. Only bullets did not fly. Thanks for your comment, Natasha. I'm inclined to agree on parliamentary systems. Another good example can be seen in the events in Israel at the moment. The truth is that democracy isn't all (as we say) "it's cracked up to be." (See James Madison).

I'm not a fan of little Justin Trudeau ... detest him. But have ZERO sympathy with the conduct of the truckers either. Don't you think that if (using your words) his handling "handling of truckers protests against crippling Covid restrictions were an epic show of a clamp down worthy of a Russian Autocrat" there would have been more bloodshed, torture, and enslavement? I tend to think you MAY have indulged in a tiny bit of hyperbole there, my friend. LOL !!

Again, thanks so MUCH for dropping in to comment.

Hyperbole was intended! And modern autocrats don’t need bullets, all they need is access to personal bank accounts, social media profiles, minutes of various civic organizations and of course police and prisons to handle bodies if necessary. Trudeau’s actions against truckers were certainly autocratic and quasi dictatorial. He even said it himself - public protests are all well and good except when they demand change in public policy! Isn’t that the very essence of an autocrat?? Always nice chatting to you, Kenneth!
