To the friends of this blog: perhaps some explanation might provide context for the recent spate of posts with religious content. After all, this blog was originally envisioned as focused on history and current affairs - in light of history - a means to talk about the 21 century restoration that we all know must come about. Many of you know that I have had a long involvent with publication and research around Thomas Paine (1737-1809) and Gilbert Vale (1789-1866), Paine’s early biographer. The last step preparatory to a full biography of Gilbert Vale, already in draft, is an annotated index of Vale’s complete work. These recent quotes are among those that pop up almost daily in my work and ones I hope will entertain, inform, and stimulate thought. Your comments or questions are always welcomed. Here’s the latest:
"Instead of God making man after his (God's) image, man has made God, and clothed him with humanity, or rather human infirmities." Gilbert Vale
