A perceptive reader of this blog inquired recently as to the meaning or reference in the name of the blog itself.
The reference in the name of the blog is to the “restoration” of the democratic republican revolutions of 1776-1792 (America and France). These revolutions themselves must first be revived in order to restore the sacred rights of man and woman that were thwarted with the overthrow and co-optation of these two events. In particular, restoration of the revolutionary ideals of liberty, equality, and fraternty in the USA; and more generally, what Paine called "the revolution of the world."
The phrase, “revolution of the world,” originated in November 1792 when Paine was guest of honor at the annual dinner of the Revolution Society formed to commemorate the English Revolution of 1688. Here he proposed a toast to “The Revolution of the World.” He is believed to be the first person in history to raise that slogan. These and other of his words were noted and added to the dossier prepared by the royal government’s agents for his arrest and prosecution for sedition.
”We have it in our power to begin the world over again. A situation, similar to the present, hath not happened since the days of Noah until now. The birthday of a new world is at hand, and a race of men, perhaps as numerous as all Europe contains, are to receive their portion of freedom …”
Thomas Paine
